Alexander Pope's words - “Histories are more full of examples of the fidelity of dogs than of friends.” may refer to his Great Dane 'Bounce', who accompanied him on walks, along with a pair of revolvers in his pockets, after the publication of “The Dunciad” in 1728.

Pope, generally regarded as the greatest English poet of the eighteenth century, is said to be the third most frequently quoted writer in the English language, after Shakespeare and Tennyson.

The Beagle is a breed of medium-sized dog in the hound group developed primarily for tracking hare, rabbit, and other game. Their keen tracking instinct and excellent sense of smell gets Beagles employed as detection dogs for prohibited items. Beagles are popular as pets because of their size, even temper, and lack of inherited health problems. Snoopy is probably the world's most famous Beagle.

Bulldog, Yale University, 1930, Giclee Print

Bulldogs are a medium size breed developed in England out of the now extinct Old English Bulldog. Originally a fighting dog, probably descended from war dogs like the old Mastiff type, the agressiveness has been bred out and the Bulldog makes a good pet. The fierce appearance of the Bulldog makes them a favorite mascot - such as 'Handsome Dan' at Yale, 'Uga' at the University of Georgia, and 'Chesty' of the U.S. Marine Corp.

Carts pulled by dogs were common means of transportation used by people who were too poor to own horses or oxen. In the late 1830s dogcarts were banished in England because it was deemed cruel, and all dog laborers were taxed, thus making it impossible for poor families to care for a dog that couldn't earn its keep. The unintended consequence was thousands of dogs being abandoned and put down.
