"Books are the carriers of civilization." Barbara Tuchman
“Books are the carriers of civilization.”
Barbara Tuchman

“Books” are the artifacts of humanity saving and transmitting information over distance and time. With the advent of marks on cave walls, which could sustain the information over time, to making marks on loose stones and shells that could be carried from one location to another, books evolved to scrolls of long rolls of flexible fiber to sheets of paper fastened together on one side within protective covers and ebooks saved and transmitted as light.

While books expand and extend information, they also create subtle limitations - can you read the text?, can you afford the book?

An Introduction to Book History - a comprehensive critical introduction to the development of the book and print culture from the spoken word to written texts . . . and the future of the book in the electronic age.

A Short History of the Printed Word - from the earliest alphabets through the evolution of the printing press.

The Book Before Printing: Ancient, Medieval and Oriental - comprehensive and authoritative study of the book before Gutenberg.

A History of the Illuminated Manuscript - works of both art and literature.

Library: An Unquiet History - On the survival and destruction of knowledge, from Alexandria to the Internet.

History of Libraries of the Western World - covering the ancient world, the medieval period, and the modern era.

Galaxies in the UniverseThe ClueTrain Manifesto: The End of Business as Usual

From four of the liveliest personalities on the Web comes a provocative, outrageous, and wickedly smart account of how the Internet has radically reframed the seemingly immutable laws of business--and what business needs to know to weather the seismic aftershocks.
