Vaslav Nijinsky, Russian ballet dancer and choreographer, was a member of Ballet Russe organized by Sergei Diaghilev. Celebrated for his virtuosity and creativity, Nijinsky was diagnosed with schizophrenia and treated by psychiatrist Eugene Bleuler. The music for the ballet Scheherazade was composed by Rimsky-Korsakov.

Anna Pavlova was a Russian ballet dancer best known for her delicate etheral look that contrasted with the then predominant Russian ideal of strong and muscular dancers, and her showpiece “The Dying Swan” danced to Camille Saint-Saëns' The Swan from Carnival of the Animals.

Because of her highly arched foot Pavlova developed a pointe shoe that served as the model for today's pointe shoe.

Ballet dancer Ida Rubinstein was considered an icon of the late 19th and early 20th century Belle Epoque of European history.

Maria Taglioni's father (and teacher) Filippo Taglioni created the ballet La Sylphide to showcase her talent. It was the first ballet where the ballerina danced en pointe for the entirety of the work.

Maria Tallchief, whose father was a chief of the Osage tribe, studied ballet with Bronislava Nijinska, the sister of Vaslav Nijinsky. She danced with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and the New York City Ballet. Tallchief was briefly married to George Balanchine and originated the Sugarplum Fairy in his version of The Nutcracker.
