John Dewey, a founder of the philosophical school of Pragmatism, was an influential progressive reformer in U.S. education during the first half of the 20th century. His core concept of education was emphasizing the broadening of the intellect and the development of problem solving with critical thinking skills, rather than the memorization of lessons.

Aaron Douglas
b. 5-26-1899, Topeka, KS
d. 2-22-1979
Aaron Douglas was born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1899. Inspired by the great black American artist Henry Ossawa Tanner, Douglas became interested in art at an early age. His parents encouraged him by hanging his painting all over the house. Douglas graduated from the Universtiy of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1922 with a degree in fine arts. He was teaching art at Lincoln High School in Topeka when his friends in New York convinced him that New York was the place for a young black artist to be. He moved there in 1926, and he became one of the top artists of the Harlem Renaissance.Aaron Douglas took many different influences, from ancient Egyptian art and African sculpture to European cubism, and mixed them all thogether to create his own style. He is best known today for his murals, or large painting on walls. Douglas painted his murals in hotels, clubs, and libraries from Harlem to Chicago and Nashville. He was also a popular magazine and book ilustrator, He designed the covers for many of the most important books of the Harlem Renaissance and created bold work for magazines such as Vanity Fair; Fire!; and The Crisis ...
In 1941, Aaron Douglas founded the art department at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. At Fisk, he helped countless young artists learn their craft. He retired from active teaching in 1966 and died in 1979.

Abbe Charles-Michel de l'Épée,

d. 12-23-1789; Paris
Épée, in the philantropic spirit of the 18th century, believed that deaf people were capable of language, and dedicated himself to developing a manual for signing langauge so the deaf could receive the sacraments, thus avoid going to hell. He has become known as the "Father of the Deaf."

Friedrich Froebel
b. 4-21-1782; Germany
d. 6-21-1852
Froebel laid the foundation for modern education with his creation of the world's first kindergarten (German = "children's garden") in Germany in 1837.
To support free self expression, creativity, social participation, motor skills, and demonstrate that children learn by playing, Froebel designed geometric building blocks, balls, tiles, sticks known as the Froebel Gifts or Gaben.
Maria Montessori was influenced by Froebel's philosophy; among the notable people who experienced Froebel materials as children are architects Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, and Buckminster Fuller; as well as anthropologist Franz Boas.

Nathan Hale

d. 9-22-1776; hung by the Bristish as a spy, possibly the corner of 3rd Ave & 66th St, Manhattan.
Nathan Hale was a teacher in East Haddam and New London, CT, after he graduated from Yale and before joining the Continental Army for the American Revolutionary War. He reportedly said, "I only regret that I have but one life to give my country."

Dr. Samuel Johnson
b. 9-18-1709; England
d. 12-13-1784
Samuel Johnson, one of England's best known literary figures, was a noted essayist, poet, biographer, lexicographer and critic; he also was a teacher for a time. It is said he is the single most quoted English writer after Shakespeare. Samuel Johnson spent many years living in the home of diarist Hester Thrale and her husband; he also was long time friend with actor David Garrick, and formed "The Club" with friend and painter Joshua Reynolds that included Oliver Goldsmith and philosopher Edmund Burke. He was also acquainted with Hannah More.
Samuel Johnson suffered from a variety of maladies which included tuberculosis, gout, cancer, depression, and with what was later identified as Tourette syndrome.

Jonathan Kozol, an education reformer, described his experience in the Boston Public School System where he was assigned to teach "fourth grade at one of its most overcrowded inner-city schools – a place where 'the books are junk, the paint peels, the teachers call you nigger, and the windows fall in on your heads.'", a situation he described in Death at an Early Age, first published in 1967.
