 Botswana, officially the Republic of Botswana and formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, is a landlocked nation in Southern Africa. It is bordered by South Africa to the south and southeast, Namibia to the west, Zambia to the north, and Zimbabwe to the northeast. Gaborone is the capital of Botswana.
Botswana, slightly smaller than the US state of Texas, is mostly the Kalahari Desert, the setting of the "Gods Must Be Crazy" movie. The Okavango Delta in Botswana's northwest is the world's largest inland delta and noted for its wildlife; the Makgadikgadi Salt Pan is in the north.
Tourism plays a large role in the Botswana economy. National parks and game reserves in the Okavango Delta with its abundant wildlife and wetlands, are a top draw for visitors. The wildlife, including lions, hyenas, cheetas, leopards, wild dogs and antelope, were described in great detail in "Cry of the Kalahari".

The Kalahari Desert is a large arid to semi-arid sandy area in southern Africa, covering 70% of Botswana and parts of Namibia and South Africa. The Kalahari has huge tracts of excellent grazing after seasonal rains. |

The Bushmen are indigenous people of the Kalahari Desert. They may be the oldest peoples of the world: genetic evidence indicates this is the starting lineage of humanity. Archaeologists have found evidence of habitation in southern Africa going back at least 22,000 years.
The Bushmen were traditionally hunter-gatherers; in the last half century of the 20th century they have switched to farming, with only minor hunting and gathering activities. The Botswana government had been removing Bushmen from the Central Kalahari Game Preserve despite the national constitution guarantee that granted the Bushmen the right to live there in perpetuity. The Okavango River has no outlet to the sea, it empties onto the sands of the Kalahari Desert where it forms the world's largest inland delta. The swamp was once part of an ancient lake that dried up some 10,000 years ago, today it is home to wildlife and attracts thousands of visitors a year. |

A traditional mekoro (also makoro) is a type of canoe used in Botswana's Okavango Delta. Made by digging out the trunk of a large straight tree, it is propelled through the shallow waters by standing in the stern and pushing with a pole. |

A hippopotamus ((Hippopotamus amphibius) is a large, mostly plant-eating African mammal.
The word hippopotamus is from the Greek - hippos meaning "horse" and potamos meaning "river".
Hippos are known to tip the mekoro canoes.

Impalas are antelopes found on the African savannas. The word impala is from the Zulu language. |

The food chain illustrated: The leopard is a carnivore which obtains its energy by consuming animals, in this case a herbivorious impala which got its energy from plants. Detritivores, scavengers and decomposers consume dead biomass. |

The Gods Must Be Crazy was a film made in the Kalahari Desert of Botsawana and South Africa in 1980.
The story begins with a group of bushmen living in harmony with the land - they have been blessed with everything they need. Then one day a pilot tosses a glass Coke bottle from his plane. This new object must be a gift from the gods because it can be used for so many things; its curse is it is the only one that has to be shared, causing want, jealousy, and violence. Mayhem ensues. . .
