 Ghana, a West African republic formed from the merger of the Gold Coast and British Togoland, was the first sub-Saharan colony to achieve independence, in 1957. Located on the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean) to the south, and Cote d'Ivoire on the west, Burkina Faso on the north, and Togo on the east, Ghana is part of the British Commonwealth. The name Ghana derived from the title of the ruler of the Wagadou Empire - the Ghanas, "warrior king."
Ghana is a few degrees north of the Equator and has a tropical climate. The largest man-made lake in the world, Lake Volta, is located in eastern Ghana. Accra is the largest city and capital of Ghana. In 1974-1976 Shirley Temple Black served as US Ambassador to Ghana.
