Libya is on the northern Mediterranean Sea coast between Egypt to the east, Sudan on the southeast, Chad on the south, Niger on southwest, and Tunisia and Algeria on the west. The "Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya" is idealistically a "state of the masses" (jamahiriya) governed by local councils; the reality is a military dictatorship headed by Col. Muammar Abu Minyar al-Qadhafi. The name Libya was given to the country in 1934 by the Italian invaders; originally Libya was the Greek for the Egyptian "Lebu" which referred to the Berber nomads who lived west of the Nile River. Foreign control is nothing new to the area- the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Vandals and Byzantines all ruled at one time, the Arabs took over in the 6th Century AD.; Libya was the first country to achieve independence (as a constitutional monarachy) through the UN, in 1969 a coup put the current leader in place.
