Mali FlagThe Republic of Mali is a landlocked western African nation and the seventh largest country in Africa, stretching from the Sahara Desert in the north to the Niger and Senegal rivers in the south. Mali is bordered by Algeria on the north, Niger on the east, Burkina Faso and the Côte d'Ivoire on the south, Guinea on the south-west, and Senegal and Mauritania on the west. Known as French Sudan during the African colonial period, Mali is named after the Empire of Mali The name Mali comes from a native word for hippopotamus, the capital city is Bamako, means "place of crocodiles".
