Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflote), one of the best known and loved operas, in the atmosphere of Enlightenment Europe where traditional institutions, customs and morals were being questioned and "reason" was advocated as the basis of authority. Using personfications of the Enlightenment ideals, Mozart created an allegory of the struggle of Reason against Tradition.

Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, is taken to the temple of Isis and Osiris by the wise priest Sarastro, to release her from the power of her mother. The young Prince Tamino is induced by the queen to search for Pamina and free her from the influence of Sarastro. In the end Pamina and Tamino are wed.

The Magic Flute premiered in 1791, less than a decade after the American Revolution, and two years before the execution of Marie Antoinette.
