Shakespeare's character Touchstone is the archetypal wise and comic fool, putting himself and everyone else (including the audience) to the test and guiding to a virtuous conclusion. The use of "touchstone" for the character's name is metaphorical use of the stone used to test for adulteration of valuable metals. |
