The primary purpose of teeth (tooth singular) is to tear and chew food. The way teeth grow is called dentition, doctors who care for teeth are called dentists. Carnivores (meat eaters) have pointed sharp teeth for catching food, herivores (plant eaters) have molars for chewing the more difficult to digest plant materials. Teeth are hard structures and therefore fossilize, becoming important identifiers for palenotologists.
