The domestication of the horse (Equus caballus) was well underway throughout the Eurasian continent by 2000 BC. The only never domesticated wild horse species (or subspecies) is the Przewalski's Horse of the central steppes of Asia; the American wild horse or mustang is feral - a domesticated horse that adapted to life in the wild after escaping from, or being lost, by the Spanish conquistadors. (In Australia feral horses are called Brumby.)

The Greek historian and calvary commander Xenophon is considered the first “horse whisperer” based on his The Art of Horsemanship, one of the earliest known works on choosing, caring for, and riding horses.

Horses have helped do the work of herding, plowing and hauling, used by military, and been a part of competition (jousting and racing), for the pleasure of man.
