Susan Dimock, a pioneer in American medicine received her qualification as a doctor from the University of Zurich in 1871 and was appointed resident physician of the New England Hospital for Women and Children in 1872.

Dorothea Dix was a social reformer who, on behalf of the indigent insane, created the first American mental hospitals, with government support.

She also served as Superintendent of Union Army Nurses during the American Civil War, where she provided equal care for the wounded of both sides.
