Herodiade (1881) is an opera in four acts based on a novella by Gustave Flaubert. Massenet's retelling of the John the Baptist story with Salome, Herod Antipas and Herodias, is less violent than Richard Strauss's Salome, based on a text by Oscar Wilde.
