Ruth St. Denis
b. 1-28-1878; Newark, NJ
d. 7-21-1968

Ruth St. Denis was a pioneer in modern dance with her husband Ted Shawn in their dance company Denishawn. She founded the one of the first U.S. university dance programs, at Adelphi, in 1938. She also taught in Hollywood, and created with Shawn the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.

Among their students were Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman; silent film star Louise Brooks performed as a dancer in the Denishawn company.

Ruth St. Denis quotes ~
“I see dance being used as communication between body and soul, to express what it too deep to find for words.”
“Our bodies are at once the receiving and transmitting stations for life itself. It is the highest wisdom to recognize this fact and train our bodies to render them sensitive and responsive to nature, art and religion. ”

Ted Shawn
b. 10-21-1891; Kansas City, MO
d. 1-9-1972

Shawn, who was studying for the ministry, was expelled from school because the university did not approve of his choice of dance to rebuild strength after a bout of diphtheria.

He and Ruth St. Denis married from 1914 to 1929, and the couple was known for their “Oriental” style in part which was inspired by Sada Yacco.

Ted Shawn quotes ~
“When in doubt, twirl.”
“I believe that dance communicates man’s deepest, highest and most truly spiritual thoughts and emotions far better than words, spoken or written.”

Salome, the daughter of Herod II and Herodias, is best remembered from the New Testament references concerning her dance and the death of John the Baptist (Mark 6:17-29 and Matt 14:3-11).

Salome inspired many works - Oscar Wilde wrote a play, Richard Strauss wrote an opera, and several ballets.
