Lohengrin opera posters and prints illustrate a twelfth-century German legend whose theme is of the Swan Knight - a rescuer who arrives in a swan-drawn boat to serve a distressed maiden with his only demand being that she must never ask his identity.

Wagner's opera Lohengrin is based on Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival, one of King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table. The main characters include Lohengrin, son of Parzival as the knight who wished to remain unknown, and Elsa who has been falsely accused of murdering her brother Godfrey by Count Telramund and his wife Ortrud. Lohengrin defends Elsa's honor, is forced into defending himself in turn killing Telramund, and releases Godfrey from his death form, a dove.

Almost everyone knows one piece from Wagner's Lohengrin - The Bridal Chorus, or “Here Comes the Bride”.

Lohengrin was first performed in Weimar, Germany on August 28, 1850. The date was chosen by the conductor (and Wagner's father-in-law) Franz Liszt, to honor the birth date Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Weimar's most famous citizen.
