Betty Grable started as a chorus girl in 1929, with her mother helping to falsifiy birth records. To promote her legs as the most beautiful in Hollywood the studio insured them for $1,000,000, playing off the 1937 movie Million Dollar Legs.

Guilbert, born into a poor family, worked as a department store model, took singng and acting lessons, sang at the Moulin Rouge, and eventually toured England, Germany, and the United States.

Henri Toulouse-Lautrec made many portraits and caricatures of Guilbert capturing her usual pose of standing almost perfectly still in a bright yellow dress and long black gloves.
