Henryk Adam Aleksandr Pius Sienkiewicz, aka Litwos, received the 1905 Nobel Prize in Literature for his “outstanding merits as an epic writer.”

Sienkiewicz traveled to California in 1876 with the family of Helena Modjeska, a talented and popular Polish actress.

Poet Lydia Sigourney, known as the “Sweet Singer of Hartford”, was such a popular figure in the mid 19th century that lyceum type study groups were formed named after her - such as the the Sigournean Club of Olathe, KS.
