Herbert Spencer

Philosopher and anthropologist Herbert Spencer, a ‘polymath’, was nominated for a Nobel Prize in Literature before his death.
Spencer's best known theory was Social Darwinism, or “the survival of the fittest”; he was also the inventor of the paper clip.

Edmund Spenser

Edmund Spenser, an English Poet Laureate, is best known for his epic poem, The Faerie Queene, celebrating Elizabeth I, and his desire to obliterate Irish culture. Spenser was friends with poet Gabriel Harvey.

Joel Elias Spingarn

Professor of comparative literature at Columbia University from 1899 to 1911, and one of the founders of Harcourt, Brace and Company, Joel Elias Spingarn is best remembered today as a Progressive politically and a civil rights activist.
Spingarn was one of the first Jewish leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and is the namesake of the Spingarn Medal.
Arthur Spingarn, brother of Joel, was also active in NAACP.
