Saint Hildegard von Bingen
b. 1098; Germany
d. 9-17-1179

About eighty of Hildegard's compositions have survived, one of the largest repertoires among medieval composers. Her music is described as monophonic - one melodic line with limited instrumentals and characterised by soaring soprano vocalizations. She is also the first composer whose biography is known.

Saint Hildegard von Bingen was a “polymath” (person with varied knowledge and learning), was also an “abbess, artist, author, counselor, linguist, naturalist, teacher, scientist, philosopher, physician, herbalist, poet, activist, and visionary”.

Georges Bizet
b. 10-25-1838; Paris, France
d. 6-3-1875

Composer and pianist of the Romantic era, Georges Bizet, is best remembered for the opera Carmen.

Bizet is an example of an artist whose genius is not recognized during their lifetime. He died of a heart attack three months after the premiere believing Carmen was a failure.

Georges Bizet quotes ~
• “As a musician I tell you that if you were to suppress adultery, fanaticism, crime, evil, the supernatural, there would no longer be the means for writing one note.”
• “Ah, music! What a beautiful art! But what a wretched profession!”
