De Varona was the youngest swimmer to compete at the 1960 Summer Olympics and won gold medals in the 400-meter individual medley and as a member of the 400-meter freestyle relay in the 1964 Summer Olympics.

She signed a contract with ABC in 1965 at age 18, becoming one of the first female sportscasters.

FYI ~ her younger sister is actress/director Joanna Kerns, who played Maggie Seaver on the ABC sitcom Growing Pains.

Lottie Dod is best remembered as a tennis player - she was Womens' Singles Champion five times, the first time when she was fifteen in 1887. She also played golf, field hockey and won a silver Olympic medal in archery (1908).

Gertrude Ederle, the daughter of German immigrants was the first woman to swim the English Channel, in 1926. She also was a gold and bronze medalist in the 1924 Summer games.
