Medicine Lake Volcano created the landforms of lava tube caves, fumaroles, cinder and spatter cones, pit craters, hornitos, maars, lava flows, and volcanic fields, now protected in the Lava Beds National Monument.

Located near Mt. Shasta in northeastern California the area includes Petroglyph Point, one of the largest panels of Native American rock art in the United States and is where the Modoc Indians, lead by Kintpuash, took refuge during the 1872-73 Modoc War.
