Psychoanalyst Otto Rank, considered one of the pioneers of humanistic psychology, existential psychotherapy, Gestalt therapy and transpersonal psychology, was part of Sigmund Freud's inner circle between 1905 and 1926.

Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Herman Roschack is best remembered for development of the projective “inkblot” test used to examine personality characteristics and emotional functioning.

Rorschack, as a student of Eugen Bleuler, began wondering why he and his childhood friends had different responses to the same inkblots, began showing inkblots to school children and recording their responses.
