The Dalai Lama is a successive title of Tibetan Buddhism that goes back to 1391. The Dalai Lama is considered the present incarnation of the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokitesvara.

“Dalai” means “ocean” (Mongolian) and “Lama” is the Tibetan translation of the Sanskrit word “guru” or teacher, referring to the lama's extensive wisdom.
