Elisabeth Rachel Félix was such a successful actress that she was known simply as Rachel. Charlotte Bronte based the character Vashti in her novel Villette on Rachel; and the color of light tannish makeup known as ‘Rachel’ is named after her. She was also the mistress of many men saying, “I am as I am; I prefer renters to owners.”

Luise Rainer, currently the oldest living Academy Award winner, for Best Actress as Anna Held in The Great Ziegfeld (1936) and then as a Chinese peasant in The Good Earth (1937), a movie based on Pearl Buck's novel of the same name.

FYI - Luise Rainer was the first wife of playwright Clifford Odets.

Lillian Russell, as one of the best known and popular entertainers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was the first voice to be carried over Alexander Graham Bell's long distance telephone lines - she sang in New York to audiences in Boston and Washington, D.C., May 8, 1890.

Russell was also and advocate of women's suffrage (her mother was the first woman to run for mayor of New York City), and did Marine recruitment and fundraising for the United States World War I effort.
