Color is the perception of the different wavelengths of light. The organ of perception for humans is the eye. Chromatics is a broad term for the science of color that include the fields of art color theory- a basic set of rules for mixing pigments, and the physics of light - the electromagnetic spectrum. A Color Wheel lesson plan is available in resources section with discussion on terms hue, tint and shade.

Quotes about Color
• “The color of the skin is in no way connected with the strength of the mind or intellectual powers.” Benjamin Banneker
• “All colors are the friends of their neighbors and the lovers of their opposites.” ~ Marc Chagall
• “Color is born of the interpenetration of light and dark.” ~ Sam Francis
• “It is only after years of struggle and deprivation that the young artist should touch color - and then only in the company of his betters.” ~ El Greco
• “The whole world, as we experience it visually, comes to us through the mystic realm of color.” ~ Hans Hofmann
• “Color possesses me. I don't have to pursue it. It will possess me always, I know it. that is the meaning of this happy hour: color and I are one. I am a painter.” ~ Paul Klee
• “Who in the rainbow can draw the line where the violet tint ends and the orange tint begins? Distinctly we see the difference of the colors, but where exactly does the one first blendingly enter into the other? So with sanity and insanity.” ~ Herman Melville, Billy Budd
• “There is silver blue, sky blue and thunder blue. Every color holds within it a soul, which makes me happy or repels me, and which acts as a stimulus. To a person who has no art in him, colors are colors, tones tones ... and that is all. All their consequences for the human spirit, which range between heaven to hell, just go unnoticed.” ~ Emil Nolde
• “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for.” ~ Georgia O'Keeffe
• “ ... that blue that will always be there as it is now after all man's destruction is finished.” ~ Georgia O'Keeffe
• “Everything is blooming most recklessly; if it were voices instead of colors, there would be an unbelievable shrieking into the heart of the night.” ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
• “The purest and most thoughtful minds are those which love color the most.” ~ John Ruskin
• “I have no color prejudices nor caste prejudices nor creed prejudices. All I care to know is that a man is a human being, and that is enough for me; he can't be any worse.” ~ Mark Twain

FYI ~ Did you theoretical physicist and mathematician James Clerk Maxwell made the first true color photograph?

Philipp Otto Runge was a Romantic German painter and draughtsman who developed the concept of a color sphere with the goal of establishing a complete world of colors resulting from mixture of the three primaries, among themselves and together with white and black.

FYI - Runge was deeply mystical, having read Jakob Boehme, and considered red, blue and yellow to represent the Christian trinity. He was also friends with Goethe.
