Pyramids are geometric shaped structures formed by connecting a polygonal base, usually thought of as a square, and a point called an apex, by triangular faces. Pyramids were built by many ancient peoples, most notably the Egyptian and the Mayan cultures.
For more ancient built environments see our Stonehenge posters page. |

A ziggurat is a stepped or terraced tower of successively receding stories or levels. Because the tops of ziggurats are flat they are not technically pyramids. Ziggurats were built by the Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians of Mesopotania of mud brick, meaning that not many survive. The Ziggurat of Ur was built c. 2100 BC, to worship the moon god Nanna. The biblical story of the Tower of Babel may have been referred to a ziggurat.
