Ubar, also known as Iram of the Pillars, was mentioned in ancient records, and referred to in folk tales, as a trading center. The location of Ubar has been suggested in Oman, part of the Rub' al Khali desert, in the southern part of the Arabian peninsula.

The demise of Ubar is suggested to be the collapse of a desert water table, ie., a sinkhole.

Ur was an important city-state in ancient Sumer, currently the country of Iraq.

Ur, once a coastal city on the Persian Gulf, near the mouth of the Euphrates, is now inland due to drought, changing river patterns, and the silting of the outlet to the Persian Gulf.

Many consider Ur to be the city mentioned in the Book of Genesis as the birthplace of Abraham.
