geography > Cities of the World | CITIES OF THE AMERICAS < social studies

A city is defined as "an urban area of high population density with some degree of self-government", differentiated from towns, villages, and hamlets by size, importance or legal status. The word urban originally described the view of life from Rome - smooth, literate and non-barbaric. The opposite of the Latin Urbanus is Rusticus, or rural.

The largest city and capital of Uruguay, Montevideo, is the southernmost capital in the Americas (and third in the world after Wellington, NZ and Noumea, New Caledonia).

Montevideo is located on the north shore of the Río de la Plata, the arm of the Atlantic Ocean that separates the south coast of Uruguay from the north coast of Argentina.

Montreal, located on the St. Lawrence River, is the largest city in the Canadian province of Quebec and the second largest French speaking city in the world, only after Paris. The name Montreal means Mount Royal for the central hill.

The site of Montreal has archeological evidence of Algonquin, Huron, and Iroquois tribal settlement for 4,000 years before French explorer Jacques Cartier became the first European to reach the area in 1535.
