The fishing village of Valdez, one of the most important ports in Alaska, was named after the Spanish naval officer Antonio Valdés y Fernández Bazán, in 1790.

The city of Valdez was badly shaken in the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake when the glacial silt under the city liquefied and caused a section of the city's shoreline to break off and sink into the sea.

Valdez was also in the news for the 1989 oil spill from the tanker the Exxon Valdez as the ship was leaving the port.
