Thomas Nast

d. 12-7-1902; Guayaquil, Ecuador (yellow fever)

Caricaturist and editorial cartoonist Thomas Nast is called the “father of the American Cartoon”. Among his accomplishments were bringing down the Tammanay Hall machine, identifying the Republican and Democratic parties with an elephant and donkey respectively, drawing Santa Claus as a bearded, plump man, and a lanky Uncle Sam as the image of the U.S.

Nast served as Theodore Roosevelt's Consul General to Equador and died there as he helped U.S. citizens escape a deadly yellow fever epidemic.

Peter Newell illustrated his humorous poems for such magazines as Harper's, Saturday Evening Post and Judge. He also wrote and illustrated children's books, illustrated the works of Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, and Lewis Carroll, and created a comic strip serial.

Kay Nielsen

d. 6-21-1957; Los Angeles, California

Kay (pronounced “kigh”) Nielsen produced gift books in the early 20th century, “the golden age of illustration”, and did stage design. Nielsen also worked for the Disney company and produced sequences of Fantasia.
