Devil's Island was a small part of the notorious French penal colony in French Guiana.

Used between 1852 and 1946 the penal colony was one of the world's most infamous places, restraining thieves and murderer as well as political prisoners such as the unjustly convicted Alfred Dreyfus.

Due to the harsh conditions, many prisoners died and surrounded by water, very few convicts ever escaped

Annatto produces a orangish color that is often used in place of saffron in Spanish recipes, and has a “slightly sweet and peppery” flavor with the scent of nutmeg.
