by E. P. Thompson

E. P. Thompson
b. 2-3-1924; Oxford, England
d. 8-28-1993; Worcester

Historian, writer, socialist, Communist Party member, and peace campaigner, E. P. Thompson is probably best known today for his historical work on the British radical movements in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, in particular The Making of the English Working Class (1963).

Thompson also wrote biographies of William Morris (subtitled “From Romantic to Revolutionary” 1955) and William Blake (Witness Against the Beast: William Blake and the Moral Law , 1993).

Thompson was influenced by the work of Mikhail Bakunin.

E. P. Thompson quotes ~
• “I have become a prisoner of the peace movement. But you can't say that the termination is coming and then say that you are going back to your own garden to dig.”
• “The missiles come first, and the justifications come second.”

d. c. 395 BC

The historian Thucydides, called the father of “scientific history” and of “political realism”, was the author of the History of the Peloponnesian War.

Thucydides quotes ~
• “The secret of happiness is freedom. The secret of freedom is courage.”
• “Justice will not come to Athens until those who are not injured are as indignant as those who are injured.”
• “Wars spring from unseen and generally insignificant causes, the first outbreak being often but an explosion of anger.”
• “History is Philosophy teaching by examples.”
• “The superior gratification derived from the use and contemplation of costly and supposedly beautiful products is, commonly, in great measure a gratification of our sense of costliness masquerading under the name of beauty.”
