Geoffrey of Monmouth

Cleric Geoffrey of Monmouth, one of the major figures in the development of British history, is best remembered for his chronicle Historia Regum Britanniae (“History of the Kings of Britain”). Geoffrey provided the first written source of the tales of King Arthur.

According to Geoffrey, who was repeating a 9th century history compilation by Nennius, “The island of Britain derives its name from Brutus, a Roman consul.”

FYI - Shakespeare used Geoffrey of Monmouth's report of a monarch named Cunobelinus as inspiration for the play “Cymbaline”.

Doris Kearns Goodwin won the Pulitzer Prize in history for No Ordinary Time; she is also the author of Wait Till Next Year, The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys, and Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream.

Robert Graves was the author of numerous historical novels such as I, Claudius, and his historical study of poetic inispiration, The White Goddess.

Graves served in WWI, being seriously wounded in trench warfare, which he describe in Good-bye to All That.

Graves was the great nephew of historian Leopold von Ranke.

The Grimm Brothers were philologists, combinating the study of literary criticism, history, and linguistics from written historical sources. Though beginning their university studies with law (following their father) the brothers are best known for transcribing and preserving the tales of the peasant classes.

The brothers are also considered as precursors of the German democratic movement. In 1837, they and five of their fellow professors, known as the Göttinger Sieben (The Göttingen Seven), were dismissed from their positions for accusing King Ernest Augustus of Hanover as violating the constitution. (FYI - Ernest Augustus was the uncle of Victoria, who became queen of England in 1837).

Historian and professor Alfred Whitney Griswold wrote his dissertation on the American cult of success. He was also was president of Yale University 1951-1963.

FYI - Griswold was a descentant of Eli Whitney.
