Beryl Markham is the first person to cross the Atlantic east to west, solo. Her memoir is West with the Night.

Glenn Martin built his first airplane in 1909, based on a design of the Wright Brothers. Martin's company evolved into Lockheed Martin in 1995.

Marie Marvingt, the most decorated woman in the history of France, was an athlete, climbed mountains, broke records in balloons, and in World War I was the first woman to fly in combat as well as establishing air ambulance services. Marvingt was also a nurse.

Pioneer military aviator Billy Mitchell is considered the “Father of the US Air Force”. The North American B-25 Mitchell is the only American military aircraft name after an individual.
