Haeckel, an eminent German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist, named thousands of new species and coined the biological terms phylum, phylogeny, and ecology. He was also a supporter of Charles Darwin.

German physician Samuel Hahnemann created the alternative practice of medicine called homeopathy. Homeopathy interprets diseases and sickness as caused by disturbances in a hypothetical vital force or life force.

Hahnemann insisted that disease was part of the “living whole”, rejecting the idea of a disease as a separate thing or invading entity.

William Harvey, a physician, described the circulatory system as blood being pumped around the body by the heart before returning to the heart and being re-circulated in a closed system in 1616, and published his work in 1628.
