Fireflies, also known as lightening bugs, are beetles that produce light in their abdomen to attract mates.

The males fly about flashing, a waiting female will flash back if she is interested.

The firefly even has a song - Glow Little Glowworm, The Mills Brothers hit of the 1950s.

The Firefly is the Pennsylvania and Tennessee State Insect and proposed as the Indiana State Insect.

The honey bee is important as a principal pollinator of crops and for producing pleasant-tasting and healthful honey. A social insect, the honey bee lives in highly organized colonies.

Ladybugs, or lady beetles, are small insects that are usually red, orange, or yellow with black spots on their back.

Most ladybugs consume other insects that damage crops. [a rainy day project]

The Ladybug is the Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee State Insect.

Monarch butterflies feature an orange and black pattern on their wings, and are known for their lengthy and multigenerational migrations. Journey North is a global study of wildlife migration and seasonal change that engages students in field observations and connecting with classrooms across North America.

The Monarch Butterfly is the Alabama, Idaho, Illinois, and Texas state insect, and the state butterfly of Minnesota and West Virginia.

The Praying Mantis is so named because of their prayer-like posture. They are an excellent natural form of pest control as they do not eat plants but eat other bugs that eat plants.
