The ancient city-state of Sparta, Greece, is noted for its unique social structure based on military training. Located in south-eastern Peloponnese, in the area called Lacedaemon, a landscape that is a natural fortress.

In Greek mythology Sparta was the daughter of Eurotas and Clete, and the wife of Lacedaemon who was the son of Zeus and the Pleaid Taygete.

The adjective “spartan” is used to suggest “simplicity, frugality, or avoidance of luxury and comfort”. The term “laconic” describes the terse and concise way of speaking that was characteristic of the Spartans.

The capital and the largest city of Sweden, Stockholm, is the most populated urban area in Scandinavia. The central part of the city are fourteen islands that are part of the Stockholm archipelago.

Strasbourg is the capital and principal city of the Alsace region in northeastern France and is the official seat of the European Parliament.

Strasbourg is on the Ill River as it flows into the Rhine. Its historic center, the Grande Île (Grand Island), was classified a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.

The name Strasbourg means “town at the crossing of roads”, Latin strata for street, German Strasse, and bourg = village.

Stuttgart, in southern Germany, is associated with automobile manufacturing, such as Benz, Daimier and Ferdinand Porsches prototype of the VW Beetle. Stuttgart also a high density of scientific, academic and research organizations.

Weissenhof Estate is a housing development built for exhibition in Stuttgart in 1927. It was an international showcase of what became known as the International style of modern architecture.

Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia.

Sucre was founded in 1538 as Ciudad de la Plata de la Nueva Toledo by the Spanish conquistadors at the site of an indigenous village named Charcas. The city was comfortable with a temperate climate at 9,000 ft and a familiar grid plan of streets based on the Andalusian city layouts of Spain.

The name Sucre honors Antonio Jose de Sucre, independence leader and friend of Simon Bolivar.

Sucre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Syracuse, a 2,700 year old city, is famous for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheatres, architecture, and as the birthplace of Archimedes. Other notable inhabitants include Sappho, Plato, Scipio Africanus, and Caravaggio.

Syracuse is located in the south-east corner of the island of Sicily, on the Gulf of Syracuse and the Ionian Sea (Mediterranean, tip of the Italian peninsula).
